Today let’s focus on a Bible miracle from the book of Matthew. When Jesus gave up His Spirit and died, graves opened and people were raised from the death (Matthew 27:50 – 53).
After Jesus had hung for 3 hours on the cross with darkness covering the whole earth and the sins of the world resting upon Him, 3 miraculous things happened. Let’s look at the third of those.
Ask the children…
What did Jesus do that no one has done before or since?
“Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit.” (Matthew 27:50)
Jesus was the first person who was capable of giving up his spirit to the Father and choosing the time of his death. As with everything else in Jesus’ life, he was in control of what was happening, not those who had nailed him to the cross. This was all part of God’s plan. To confirm this, 3 miracles happened at this same moment. What was the third?
“and tombs opened. The bodies of many godly men and women who had died were raised from the dead. They left the cemetery after Jesus’ resurrection, went into the holy city of Jerusalem, and appeared to many people.” (Matthew 27:52, 53)
The death of Jesus brought the opportunity for new life to everyone. God showed this by raising many people from the dead that day. New life in Christ was symbolized by new life for those who had been physically dead.
It must have blown people’s minds to see their departed loved ones showing up alive. How could this happen? Only by the hand of God. The same hand that would allow Jesus to be put to death on the cross and would raise Him from the dead in 3 days.
What a miracle. Ask your children how they would feel if a departed loved one suddenly came back to life? Ask them how Jesus’ death could bring about new life? Ask them what that new life means to them personally? This would be a great time to share with them the good news of forgiveness of sin and new life in Christ.
We have such a wonderful heavenly Father who loves us incredibly.
