When I was a young man and didn’t know Jesus, I thought life was all about me and my small picture of the world. I thought that I was totally in charge of my destiny and that my value could be measured only in my accomplishments. Therefore I was selfish, competitive, jealous, insecure and unhappy.
Fortunately, my small picture thinking had enough sad consequences that I was driven to ask a respected friend what was wrong with my life. He told me that I was missing the Big picture of what life is about and that Big picture is that God created me and loves me so much that He sent Jesus to die for me so He could become my friend and that in Jesus I would find unconditional love and a real life purpose.
Now that is BIG picture thinking. To think that I am part of the story being woven by God and that He loves me and has a special part for me to play. That BIG picture truth has made all the difference in my life; who I married, how I raised my kids, who my friends are, where I live, what I think about and talk about; my very purpose for being here and where I am going when I die.
Right in the middle of your Bible there is the little Psalm 117. I think it is in the middle but because it is the heart of the story of the Bible and of life.
“Praise the LORD, all you nations. Praise him, all you people of the earth. For he loves us with unfailing love; the LORD’s faithfulness endures forever. Praise the LORD!”
If you want to teach your kids anything about the real story of life, teach them the BIG picture about what is contained here in this Psalm.
- God loves each one of us and His love never fails
- God will faithfully lead our lives from beginning to end.
- We are to respond to Him in love with others
That is the BIG picture of the story that God wants us to know and live by and that is the blessing of knowing the BIG picture.
