Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 1, Jeremiah1, Responding To God’s Call

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Jeremiah 1) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Jeremiah spoke for 42 years to Judah (God’s people).  His prophetic witness spanned over the reigns of 5 kings.  Sadly, most of his words urging them to repent and turn back to God went unheeded and Judah was eventually taken into captivity by the Babylonians.

In chapter 1 of his book, Jeremiah writes about his calling by God to be God’s prophet.  Jeremiah struggles with this calling just as many of us do.

Ask the children…

What was the Lord’s calling for Jeremiah?

“I knew you before I formed you in your mother’s womb. Before you were born I set you apart and appointed you as my prophet to the nations.” (Jeremiah 1:5)

How did Jeremiah respond?

“’O Sovereign Lord,’ I said, ‘I can’t speak for you! I’m too young!'” (Jeremiah 1:6)

How did God respond to Jeremiah’s fear?

“The Lord replied, ‘Don’t say, ‘I’m too young,’ for you must go wherever I send you and say whatever I tell you. 8 And don’t be afraid of the people, for I will be with you and will protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!’”  (Jeremiah 1:7)

So what would enable Jeremiah to fulfill his calling despite his young age?  God would!  God promised to be with him and to protect him and to give Jeremiah the words.  God does the same for us today.  He not only calls us, He enables us and walks with us every step of the way.

Ask your children if God has put a calling in their hearts?  If not, ask them to begin to listen for God’s prompting.  Just like He did with Jeremiah, God has created each of us to do something special for His glory.  If they sense a prompting from God, then encourage them to explore it and begin to experience God’s strength and wisdom to carry out that call.
