Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 10, Jeremiah 38, Imprisoned In A Well

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Jeremiah 38 ) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Jeremiah spoke for 42 years to Judah (God’s people). His prophetic witness spanned over the reigns of 5 kings. Sadly, most of his words urging them to repent and turn back to God went unheeded and Judah was eventually taken into captivity by the Babylonians.

God never promised Jeremiah that God’s people would listen to his prophecies, in fact God promised the very opposite.  It is hard to imagine that things could get worse for Jeremiah than being in prison, but they did…

Ask the children…

Where was Jeremiah put that was worse than a prison cell?

“So the officials took Jeremiah from his cell and lowered him by ropes into an empty cistern in the prison yard. It belonged to Malkijah, a member of the royal family. There was no water in the cistern, but there was a thick layer of mud at the bottom, and Jeremiah sank down into it.” (Jeremiah 38:6)

So here was Jeremiah imprisoned down deep in a well and up to his armpits in mud.  What happened next?

“Then when Jeremiah was ready, 13 they pulled him out. So Jeremiah was returned to the courtyard of the guard—the palace prison—where he remained.” (Jeremiah 38:12, 13)

So God didn’t leave Jeremiah down in the well.  There were still a few men who believed him.  But Jeremiah was still left in prison.  God fulfilled His promise to provide Jeremiah the strength to preach his call to repentance for 42 years despite the people’s hard hearted indifference.

Ask your children how they feel when they are ignored by others?  How do they feel when they are made fun of for their beliefs?  Imagine Jeremiah going through this for 42 years.  Thank God that He never gives up on us and keeps speaking words of truth and hope even if we ignore Him.
