Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 12, Jeremiah 52, Final Ray Of Hope

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Jeremiah 52) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Jeremiah spoke for 42 years to Judah (God’s people). His prophetic witness spanned over the reigns of 5 kings. Sadly, most of his words urging them to repent and turn back to God went unheeded and Judah was eventually taken into captivity by the Babylonians.

After a final round judgements spoken against the enemies of Judah, Jeremiah concludes his book with a final ray of hope for the Babylonian exiles.

Ask the children…

How long had Judah been in exile in Babylon by this time?  Who had come to power in Babylon?

“‘In the thirty-seventh year of the exile of King Jehoiachin of Judah, Evil-merodach ascended to the Babylonian throne.” (Jeremiah 52:31)

How did this evil king treat the Judean king?

“He was kind to[o] Jehoiachin and released him from prison on March 31 of that year.[p] 32 He spoke kindly to Jehoiachin and gave him a higher place than all the other exiled kings in Babylon.(Jeremiah 52, 31, 32)

After 31 years of captivity, God provided a ray of hope to His people.  He touched the heart of the evil Babylonian king to treat the king God Judah, king Jehoiachin with kindness.  God was reminding His people that He had not left them forever, He would some day bring them back as He had promised through Jeremiah.

Ask your children how they would feel if they had been in captivity for 31 years and it appeared that they had been abandoned by God?  Ask them if they would be encouraged if their leader was given honor and taken care of after having been ignored?  Remind them that God is not ignoring them in their lives.  He is involved every day and is providing signs of His presence if they would look and listen for Him.  Share one of your own recent stories of God’s activity in your life.
