Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 16, Ezekiel 11, Hearts Of Stone Removed

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Ezekiel 11) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Ezekiel ministered for 22 years to the Jews who had been already taken into exile in Babylon while their brothers left behind back in Judah were still rebelling against God. Ezekiel is a man of visions and writes of the judgement that Judah will experience and also God’s promises of restoration.

While still in Babylon, God’s Spirit came and took Ezekiel in the spirit back to Jerusalem to see what would happen there in the future.  Along with seeing the destruction of the city, the Spirit allowed Ezekiel to see what God would do for those currently in exile.

Ask the children…

What was God going to do for the exiles?

“I, the Sovereign Lord, will gather you back from the nations where you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel once again.” (Ezekiel 11:17)

What would God do to their hearts and how would that change their relationship with God?

“And I will give them singleness of heart and put a new spirit within them. I will take away their stony, stubborn heart and give them a tender, responsive heart,[b] 20 so they will obey my decrees and regulations. Then they will truly be my people, and I will be their God.” (Ezekiel 11:19, 20)

God has always wanted the hearts of His people.  It has never been about the Law but about God’s people’s willingness to voluntarily follow Him.  God has a wonderful plan for every person’s life if they will only listen and obey.  But that takes a heart softened towards God.

Ask your children if they are struggling to obey God in any certain area?   Can they feel their heart hardening towards God?  It feels like a selfish desire to do what they want and not what God wants.  Ask God to remove that stony part of their hearts and replace it with a soft heart that will rejoice in obeying their heavenly Father.
