Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 17, Ezekiel 12, A One Act Play

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Ezekiel 12) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Ezekiel ministered for 22 years to the Jews who had been already taken into exile in Babylon while their brothers left behind back in Judah were still rebelling against God. Ezekiel is a man of visions and writes of the judgement that Judah will experience and also God’s promises of restoration.

God instructed Ezekiel to put on a one act play showing what was going to happen to those who remained in Jerusalem and refused to turn to God.

Ask the children…

What did God ask Ezekiel to act out?

“So now, son of man, pretend you are being sent into exile. Pack the few items an exile could carry, and leave your home to go somewhere else. Do this right in front of the people so they can see you. Bring your baggage outside during the day so they can watch you. Then in the evening, as they are watching, leave your house as captives do when they begin a long march to distant lands.”  (Ezekiel 12:3, 4)

What else did God tell Ezekiel to do?

“Dig a hole through the wall while they are watching and go out through it. 6 As they watch, lift your pack to your shoulders and walk away into the night.” (Ezekiel 12:5)

God is so creative.  He will use any means to get our attention and our hearts.  We all love stories so God has Ezekiel act out the prophetic story of those people left in Jerusalem being taken away from their homeland into exile.  .

Ask your children what means God has been using to speak to them recently?  A moving of their heart by something they read, saw on T.V., was said by their friends, the consequences of their actions, a dream, etc.  Are they looking for and expecting God to speak to them?  Ask them how they are going to respond to God’s creative voice?
