Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 18, Ezekiel 18, Freedom From Generational Sin

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Ezekiel 18) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Ezekiel ministered for 22 years to the Jews who had been already taken into exile in Babylon while their brothers left behind back in Judah were still rebelling against God. Ezekiel is a man of visions and writes of the judgement that Judah will experience and also God’s promises of restoration.

Ezekiel instructed God’s people regarding some of their false beliefs.

Ask the children…

What false belief did the people have?

“’What?’ you ask. ‘Doesn’t the child pay for the parent’s sins?’” (Ezekiel 18:19)

What instruction did Ezekiel provide?

“No! For if the child does what is just and right and keeps my decrees, that child will surely live. 20 The person who sins is the one who will die. The child will not be punished for the parent’s sins, and the parent will not be punished for the child’s sins.” (Ezekiel 18:19, 20)

God’s people were depressed because they believed that their children would be punished for the sins the parents had committed against God. If this was true, then there was no hope.  But Ezekiel instructed them that each will receive their reward or discipline from the Lord based upon what they have done, not their parents.

If there is generational sin in your family, then remind your children that it can stop right now if you have not already stopped it.  Whether it false religion, or anger, or jealousy, or abuse of alcohol or drugs or any other rebellion against God, it does not have to be handed down.  God will not judge them for what their ancestors have done nor do they have to repeat it.  Pray a prayer of freedom and release from those generational sins and thank God He looks just at us and what His Son has done for us on the cross.
