Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 2, Jeremiah 9, Boast In The Lord

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Jeremiah 9) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Jeremiah spoke for 42 years to Judah (God’s people). His prophetic witness spanned over the reigns of 5 kings. Sadly, most of his words urging them to repent and turn back to God went unheeded and Judah was eventually taken into captivity by the Babylonians.

The people of Judah were very proud of their national heritage and wealth and wisdom and riches.  In chapter 9, Jeremiah warns them that God has something very different in mind for them to boast in.

Ask the children…

What did Jeremiah warn the people not to boast in?

“Don’t let the wise boast in their wisdom, or the powerful boast in their power, or the rich boast in their riches.” (Jeremiah 9:23)

What should the boast in?

“But those who wish to boast should boast in this alone: that they truly know me and understand that I am the Lord who demonstrates unfailing love and who brings justice and righteousness to the earth, and that I delight in these things. I, the Lord, have spoken!” (Jeremiah 1:6)

The one thing we are called boast in is the fact that we know the Lord and in all the wonderful things that He does.  Every other boast focuses on US and misses out on the one who created us in the first place.

Ask your children what they are proud of?  Do they boast to others about it?  Who are they focusing the attention on?  Now ask them how they could change their boasting to boasting about the Lord and what He has done and what He is doing?  Think of some specific things that you could say to others today and try it out.  See if you don’t begin to sense God’s delight as you do it instead of that empty feeling we get inside when we boast about ourselves.
