This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Daniel 6) while we focus in on just a few verses.
Background: The prophet Daniel was taken captive as a youth and brought to Babylon to be trained as an advisor for the king. He prophesied during the Judah’s 70 year exile in Babylon. He confronted pagan king’s regarding God’s worldwide rule, intrepreted dreams and foretold the future.
King Darius the Mede became the ruler in Babylon. His advisors convinced him to sign a law that no one could pray to anyone but the king for the next 30 days. The penalty for disobedience was to be thrown into the lion’s den.
Ask the children…
When Daniel heard about this law, what did he do?
“But when Daniel learned that the law had been signed, he went home and knelt down as usual in his upstairs room, with its windows open toward Jerusalem. He prayed three times a day, just as he had always done, giving thanks to his God.” (Daniel 6:10)
As a result what happened to Daniel?
“So at last the king gave orders for Daniel to be arrested and thrown into the den of lions. The king said to him, ‘May your God, whom you serve so faithfully, rescue you.’17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den. The king sealed the stone with his own royal seal and the seals of his nobles, so that no one could rescue Daniel.” (Daniel 6:17, 18 )
The kind didn’t want to throw Daniel into the lion’s den but the law was the law. So he reluctantly threw Daniel in and sealed the entrance. When the king came the next morning to find out if Daniel was still alive, what did Daniel tell him?
“Daniel answered, ‘Long live the king! 22 My God sent his angel to shut the lions’ mouths so that they would not hurt me, for I have been found innocent in his sight. And I have not wronged you, Your Majesty.’” (Daniel 6:21, 22)
Evil mankind cannot thwart the plans of God. God the maker of heaven and earth can shut the mouth of lion’s, calm a storm, heal a body, or change a heart. We need only trust Him to do what is best.
Ask your children if they are in a difficult situation where they are having trouble trusting God? Ask them how they can apply Daniel’s story to their own lives? Have them pray it through telling God how they feel and how they are going to trust God by faith.
