Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 8, Jeremiah 31, God’s Laws On Our Hearts

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Jeremiah 31) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Jeremiah spoke for 42 years to Judah (God’s people). His prophetic witness spanned over the reigns of 5 kings. Sadly, most of his words urging them to repent and turn back to God went unheeded and Judah was eventually taken into captivity by the Babylonians.

Jeremiah prophesied of the day that there would be a change regarding the relationship of God’s people to God.  Something amazing was going to happen.

Ask the children…

What was this new covenant (agreement) that God promised His people?

“‘But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day,’ says the Lord. ‘I will put my instructions deep within them, and I will write them on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people.'” (Jeremiah 31:33)

God’s people had been instructed that they needed to go the priest in order to know God’s instructions and they would have to go to the temple and make sacrifices in order to receive forgiveness.  God’s laws would no longer be external, but on their hearts.  How would all that change?

“’For everyone, from the least to the greatest, will know me already,’ says the Lord. ‘And I will forgive their wickedness, and I will never again remember their sins.’” (Jeremiah 31:34)

God’s promise was that the whole relationship would change.  Through Jesus, they would have their sins forgiven and each person would know God and be able to communicate with Him and learn from Him.

Ask your children if they understand the great gift they have been given?  That God’s law is on their hearts.  That they can know God personally and talk to Him any time they want.  That the Holy Spirit is their personal counselor and will guide them every day if they ask Him to.  That their sins have been forgiven and they don’t have to carry any guilt with them.  Take some time to thank God for this new covenant and talk to God about whatever is on their hearts.
