Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – August 9, Jeremiah 36, Burning God’s Word

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Jeremiah 36) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Jeremiah spoke for 42 years to Judah (God’s people). His prophetic witness spanned over the reigns of 5 kings. Sadly, most of his words urging them to repent and turn back to God went unheeded and Judah was eventually taken into captivity by the Babylonians.

King Jehoiakim could not stand the prophecies that Jeremiah was making regarding his people.  He got so angry that he did a crazy thing.

Ask the children…

Jeremiah dictated to his scribe Baruch all the messages he had spoken to the people.  Then Baruch took those messages to the leaders and read them.  Then these messages were sent to the king and they were read to him.  What did he do?

“Each time Jehudi finished reading three or four columns, the king took a knife and cut off that section of the scroll. He then threw it into the fire, section by section, until the whole scroll was burned up. 24 Neither the king nor his attendants showed any signs of fear or repentance at what they heard.” (Jeremiah 36:23, 24)

What happened to king Jehoiakim as a result of his unwillingness to heed God’s words and change his own life and the lives of those he ruled?

“Now this is what the Lord says about King Jehoiakim of Judah: He will have no heirs to sit on the throne of David. His dead body will be thrown out to lie unburied—exposed to the heat of the day and the frost of the night.” (Jeremiah 26:30)

It is dangerous to ignore God’s words.  When we do it is like we are burning the word of God and ignoring it.

Ask your children if God has spoken to them recently from His word about something they need to change in their lives?  Are they doing what it says?  Encourage them not to be like king Jehoikim who ignored God’s words and who’s life was ruined as a result.
