Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – July 1, Proverbs 1, Purposes of Proverbs

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Proverbs 1) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The book of Proverbs (wise sayings) is one of the most practical book in the Bible.  It is full of timeless teaching for everyday living.  In it are approximately 900 pieces of wise advice for young and old.

Right at the beginning of this book, we find the purposes of Proverbs.

Ask the children…

What are the purposes of proverbs?

“Their purpose is to teach people wisdom and discipline,  to help them understand the insights of the wise. 3 Their purpose is to teach people to live disciplined and successful lives, to help them do what is right, just, and fair.” (Proverbs 1:2, 3)

WOW!  Wouldn’t it be wonderful to live a wise and disciplined life, to be successful and to do what is right, just and fair.  What will proverbs give to young people?

“These proverbs will give insight to the simple, knowledge and discernment to the young.” (Proverbs 1:4)

As young people who have not seen a lot of life, how important is it to gain knowledge and discernment real fast?  This world is hitting our children with difficult issues and choices at younger and younger ages.  God has provided the book of Proverbs to address just that problem.

Read through Proverbs 1 with your children and ask them about the importance of wisdom from Proverbs and what are the benefits of gaining it and the danger of ignoring it.
