Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – July 15, Isaiah 7, The Birth Of Immanuel

Isaiah

Isaiah

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Isaiah 7) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The prophet Isaiah wrote this book to the southern tribe of Judah during a time of national emergency. The 12 tribes of Israel had been divided. 10 tribes in the north and 2 in the south (Judah was one of these). Even the tribe of Judah had turned their backs on God and were facing extinction by the cruel Assyrians. In the first 39 chapters are recorded a series of messages that Isaiah preaches over 40 years, to warn the Jews to turn away from their sin and to receive God’s forgiveness and blessing.

God had promised King Ahaz of Judah that He would protect Judah from the invading army of Aram.  God had instructed King Ahaz to ask for a sign so God could prove that He would do this but King Ahaz had refused to test the Lord.  So God told them the sign He would give to them…

Ask the children…

What was the sign that the Lord gave to the people?  Who was the fulfillment of this sign?

“All right then, the Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin[f] will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means ‘God is with us’).” (Isaiah 7:14)

Jesus was the fulfillment of this sign.  He was born of a virgin and was called Immanuel.  He was ‘God with us’ not only for Judah but for all the world.  And this Isaiah prophesied by God’s direction 740 years before it happened.  Who else can predict the future except God?

Ask your children if they can predict exactly what is going to happen tomorrow?  If they think so, have them think of everything that happened yesterday and if they could have predicted it.  Remind them that God knows every event that will every happen to them (Psalm 139:16) and He is preparing them for these events.  They don’t need to be afraid, they can look forward to the future and be confident in God’s plan because of what Jesus has done and is doing while sitting at the right hand of the throne of God.
