Background: The book of Proverbs (wise sayings) is one of the most practical book in the Bible. It is full of timeless teaching for everyday living. In it are approximately 900 pieces of wise advice for young and old.
One of the most important things about any person is if they continue to be a learner their whole lives. Learning however is not just about gaining knowledge, it is about valuing it and applying it.
Ask the children…
How are we to value God’s commands?
“Follow my advice, my son; always treasure my commands.” (Proverbs 7:1)
We are to treasure God’s commands like a precious possession. What are we to do with these commands?
“Obey my commands and live! Guard my instructions as you guard your own eyes.” (Proverbs 7:2)
We are to obey them and we are to guard them because their are those who would tell us to live otherwise. What do we do so we won’t forget them?
“Tie them on your fingers as a reminder. Write them deep within your heart.” (Proverbs 7:3)
Just like you would tie a string around your finger to remind you to do something and not forget it, we are to put these proverbs deep within our hearts. What does that mean? Memorize them and think about them.
Pick out a proverb with your children and use it as a memory verse this week. Talk about it every day at dinner and at night when you tuck your children into bed so it will go deep within their hearts. A good one might be Proverbs 3:5, 6.
