This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Psalm 51) while we focus in on just a few verses.
Background: The book of Psalms was written by at least 7 authors. It expresses a range of human emotions from praise to God in good times, fear of enemies in bad times, guilt, anger and an overriding confidence in God’s goodness, majesty and power. In Psalm 46 David turns to God with his heavy load of sin, let’s see what he expects God to do about it.
Ask the children…
How did David feel about his sin?
“For I recognize my rebellion;
it haunts me day and night.” (Psalm 51:3)
Who was David really sinning against?
“Against you, and you alone, have I sinned;
I have done what is evil in your sight.” (Psalm 51:4)
What did David expect to receive from God as a result of his confession of sin and why?
“Have mercy on me, O God,
because of your unfailing love.
Because of your great compassion,
blot out the stain of my sins.
2 Wash me clean from my guilt.
Purify me from my sin.” (Psalm 51:1, 2)
David was haunted by his sin and his guilt about how he had sinned against God and disobeyed His Father in heaven. But the wonderful news it is that because God is always loving, merciful and compassionate, David experienced the removal of his sin, cleansing and a purification of heart.
Ask your children if they have felt the heavy weight of sin in their lives? Have them describe how they felt. Ask them what they did about it? Ask them if there is any sin they want to get cleansed from right now? Pray with them the same prayer that David prayed and then praise God for freedom from sin.
