Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – June 21, Psalm 106, God’s Unfailing Love

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Psalm 106) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The book of Psalms was written by at least 7 authors. It expresses a range of human emotions from praise to God in good times, fear of enemies in bad times, guilt, anger and an overriding confidence in God’s goodness, majesty and power.

Psalm 106 reminds God’s people of how fickle and rebellious they have been towards God during their history but that God’s unfailing love is always ready to welcome them back if they will only return to Him.

Ask the children…

How did the Psalmist describe how this present generation had acted towards God?

“Like our ancestors, we have sinned.
We have done wrong! We have acted wickedly!”
(Psalm 106:6)

After the Pslamist reminds the people of their past sin, despite God’s always being their for them, what enouragement does the Psalmist give?

“Even so, he (God) pitied them in their distress
    and listened to their cries.
45 He remembered his covenant with them
and relented because of his unfailing love.”
(Psalm 106:44, 45)

It would have been like a sip of cold, sweet, clear water in the middle of a desert journey for God’s people to hear that God was still willing to listen to them, have pity on them and welcome them back because of His unfailing love.  They thought they deserved only God’s anger and instead they could receive God’s unfailing love.

Ask your children what they think God is like?  Is He like the great traffic cop in the sky watching their every move and ready to give them a ticket whenver they mess up? Or is He like a loving father always ready to care for His children and give them good things and to forgive them because He believes in what they can be?  Assure your children that He is the latter.  Take some time to thank God for who He is and if there is anything your children (or you for that matter) need to repent of, do it now and enjoy the sweet refreshment of God’s unfailing love.
