This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Psalm 19) while we focus in on just a few verses.
Background: The book of Psalms was written by at least 7 authors. It expresses a range of human emotions from praise to God in good times, fear of enemies in bad times, guilt, anger and an overriding confidence in God’s goodness, majesty and power. In Psalm 19 David shares how much he loves God’s words and how satisfying they are to him.
Ask the children…
What does David say that God’s words (instructions, decrees) do for us?
“The instructions of the Lord are perfect,
reviving the soul.
The decrees of the Lord are trustworthy,
making wise the simple.” (Psalm 19:7)
How desirable are the words of God according to David?
“They (God’s words) are more desirable than gold,
even the finest gold.
They are sweeter than honey,
even honey dripping from the comb.” (Psalm 19:10)
So often we think of reading our Bibles as something we are just supposed to do, something we do to please God. David saw the benefits of being in the word much differently. From his time studying God’s word his soul was revived (overcame discouragement), he gained wisdom to live life well, God’s word made him rich (more so than gold) and satisfied him (sweeter than honey).
Ask your children how they view their time in God’s word? How would that change if they had the same view that David presents here? Take today’s chapter and read it together out loud. Highlight all the things the word of God does for us. Write these on a sheet of paper and hang it somewhere the family can see it when they read the word. Each time you read, first review what the word of God will do for you.
Feel free to share your own stories below in the comments section.
