Background: The book of Proverbs (wise sayings) is one of the most practical books in the Bible. It is full of timeless teaching for everyday living. In it are approximately 900 pieces of wise advice for young and old. Solomon wrote most of these proverbs.
Rest is a good thing, laziness can have different consequences.
Ask the children…
What happens when someone is lazy and not willing to work hard?
“I walked by the field of a lazy person, the vineyard of one with no common sense. 31 I saw that it was overgrown with nettles. It was covered with weeds, and its walls were broken down.” (Proverbs 24:30, 31)
What will be the results in our lives if we are continuously lazy?
“Then, as I looked and thought about it, I learned this lesson: 33 A little extra sleep, a little more slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest— 34 then poverty will pounce on you like a bandit; scarcity will attack you like an armed robber.” (Proverbs 24:32-34)
If we don’t work hard, then we will be poor. It is as simple as that. Of course there are some who were born into wealthy families and don’t have to work hard, but for most our willingness to work hard will directly relate not only to our financial well being but also how we feel about ourselves, others and God.
Ask your children on a scale of 1 to 10 how lazy they are? 1 being very lazy and 10 being hard working. Ask them what they think it would take for them to change? Explain from your experiences that you don’t learn to be industrious in a day. It takes a long time of good choices to make this an internalized value.
