Background: The book of Job tells the story of a faithful man who feared God. One day Satan (the acccuser) came to God making accusations against God’s people. God suggested that Satan take a look at His faithful servant Job. Satan told God that the only reason that Job was faithful was because God was blessing him. God therefore gave Satan permission to test Job. And Satan did; he destroyed Job’s crops, livestock, servants, houses and even killed Job’s children. Let’s see how Job responded.
Ask the children…
How did Job feel about all that had happened to him?
“Job stood up and tore his robe in grief. Then he shaved his head and fell to the ground to worship.” (Job 1:20)
What did Job have to say to God about all this?
“I came naked from my mother’s womb,
and I will be naked when I leave.
The Lord gave me what I had,
and the Lord has taken it away.
Praise the name of the Lord!” (Job 1:21)
Even though Job didn’t know why all these things were happening to him, he chose to trust God and praise Him anyway. Job had nothing when he came into the world and would leave it with nothing and he would trust God during his life whether he had anything or not.
Ask your children if they have been going through any testing? What is it? What has their attitude been during the testing? How could they change it to match up with Job’s? Pray with them and say out loud together Job’s words from v.21.
