Background: The book of Job tells the story of a faithful man who feared God. One day Satan (the acccuser) came to God making accusations against God’s people. God suggested that Satan take a look at His faithful servant Job. Satan told God that the only reason that Job was faithful was because God was blessing him. God therefore gave Satan permission to test Job. And Satan did; he destroyed Job’s crops, livestock, servants, houses and even killed Job’s children and finally Satan destroyed Job’s health. Job has 3 friends who come to sit with him and to give him their advice. But with friends like this…
Ask the children…
What advice does Job’s friend Zophar give to him?
“Listen! God is doubtless punishing you
far less than you deserve!” “But the wicked will be blinded.
They will have no escape.
Their only hope is death.” (Job 11:6, 20)
Not very comforting words. How does Job respond?
“As for you, you smear me with lies.
As physicians, you are worthless quacks.
5 If only you could be silent!
That’s the wisest thing you could do.” (Job 13:4, 5)
Jobs friends all tell Job that the reason he is going through such pain is because God is punishing him for sin. They tell him to repent and God will relent. Job argues that his life is blameless and tells his “friends” to be quiet if that is all the comfort they can provide.
Ask your children how important their friends are to them? What would they do if their friends constantly lectured them about what they were doing wrong? They wouldn’t be their friends very long. Job knew when to listen to his friends and when to tell them to be quiet. Ask your children if they have learned this?
