Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – May 29, Job 36, Can We Understand God?

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Job 36) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The book of Job tells the story of a faithful man who feared God. One day Satan (the acccuser) came to God making accusations against God’s people. God suggested that Satan take a look at His faithful servant Job. Satan told God that the only reason that Job was faithful was because God was blessing him. God therefore gave Satan permission to test Job. And Satan did; he destroyed Job’s crops, livestock, servants, houses and even killed Job’s children and finally Satan destroyed Job’s health. Job’s final young friend, Elihu, reminds Job that there are things about God we can’t understand.

Ask the children…

Can we understand everything about God?

“God is greater than we can understand.
    His years cannot be counted.”
(Job 36:26)

What is an example of something we cannot understand about what God does?

“Who can understand the spreading of the clouds
and the thunder that rolls forth from heaven?”
(James 36:29)

We all want to figure out our worlds and make sense out of the things that happen to us just like Job was trying to do.  But there are many times when we are not going to be able to understand our situations any more than we can understand all about God.  We are just too limited to see all of what God is doing.

Ask your children to look around at nature and to tell you some of the things that God does that they do not understand.  Ask them what are some of the things in their lives that they do not understand?  Explain to them that God wants them to trust Him with those things they don’t understand just as they accept the things in nature that they do not understand.  Pray and thank God that He has everything under His control.
