Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – May 30, Job 38, God Questions Us

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Job 38) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: The book of Job tells the story of a faithful man who feared God. One day Satan (the acccuser) came to God making accusations against God’s people. God suggested that Satan take a look at His faithful servant Job. Satan told God that the only reason that Job was faithful was because God was blessing him. God therefore gave Satan permission to test Job. And Satan did; he destroyed Job’s crops, livestock, servants, houses and even killed Job’s children and finally Satan destroyed Job’s health.  Job has plenty of questions for God and finally God answers Job back but but doesn’t provide answers.

Ask the children…

What does God give to Job instead of answers?

“Brace yourself like a man,
because I have some questions for you,
    and you must answer them.”
(Job 38:3)

What kind of questions does God ask Job?

“Where were you when I laid the foundations of the earth?
Tell me, if you know so much.
Who determined its dimensions
and stretched out the surveying line?”
(James 38:4, 5)

Instead of providing answers to Job’s questions, which Job would not have understood even if God had answered him, God fired back some questions of His own.  These were questions about creation and how God had made it all and sustains it day after day.  Just like Job could not possibly understand how God did all this, he would have to trust God without getting the answers he wanted about his situation.

Ask your children if they can trust God without getting all their questions answered?  Ask them if they know God well enough to be able to believe that He is powerful enough to answer and loving enough to want to answer.  Talk to them about your relationship with God and how you have learned to trust Him.
