Background: Amos was a shepherd from the little town of Tekoa who prophesied to the big city folks of Israel who were living in the lap of luxury but ignoring God. Amos didn’t pull any punches when he told God’s people that if they didn’t turn back to God they would disciplined by God.
The king of Israel had paid prophets who told him what he wanted to hear. But Amos was certainly not like that.
Ask the children…
Because he didn’t like the messages that Amos brought to the king, Amaziah the priest told Amos to do what?
“Then Amaziah sent orders to Amos: ‘Get out of here, you prophet! Go on back to the land of Judah, and earn your living by prophesying there!’” (Amos 7:12)
How did Amos respond?
“But Amos replied, ‘I’m not a professional prophet, and I was never trained to be one.[c] I’m just a shepherd, and I take care of sycamore-fig trees. 15 But the Lord called me away from my flock and told me, ‘Go and prophesy to my people in Israel.'” (Amos 7:14, 15)
The prophets of the king in that time were actually trained to say what the king wanted to hear. The king wanted to hear all about peace and prosperity, but wasn’t the truth. The people were living in luxury, ignoring God and the needy and were about to experience slavery and captivity in a foreign land. God called Amos, just a shepherd and fig tree pruner, to go and prophecy to the royal officials. the TRUTH. Not for profit but for God.
Ask your children if they feel inadequate to speak to their friends about God? Most of us do? Who are WE to speak about God? But each of us has an experience of what God is doing in our lives. That is what God wants us to share. That is our prophetic word that God is speaking to us every day that He wants us to tell others when He asks us to. Ask God for an opportunity today to share with someone else about what God is doing in your life.
