Background: Amos was a shepherd from the little town of Tekoa who prophesied to the big city folks of Israel who were living in the lap of luxury but ignoring God. Amos didn’t pull any punches when he told God’s people that if they didn’t turn back to God they would disciplined by God.
God gives Amos a special vision to explain what He is going to do.
Ask the children…
What was the vision given by God to Amos?
“Then the Sovereign Lord showed me another vision. In it I saw a basket filled with ripe fruit. 2 ”What do you see, Amos?’ he asked. I replied, ‘A basket full of ripe fruit.’” (Amos 8:1, 2)
What did that vision mean?
“Then the Lord said, ‘Like this fruit, Israel is ripe for punishment! I will not delay their punishment again.'” (Amos 8:2)
Even God who is very patient towards His people will not withold His punishment forever. Why? Because through the punishment of their being taken into captivity they would learn that their blessings always came from God and when they turned their back on God their blessings were removed and their joy was removed.
Ask your children if they feel they have sensed a removal of joy when they disobeyed God and turned their back on Him? Discuss how true joy comes from knowing God and following His will for our lives no matter how hard it may seem at the time.
