Children’s One Year Study Thru The Bible – September 20, Zephaniah 1, Beware Of Being Lukewarm

This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Zephaniah 1) while we focus in on just a few verses.

Background: Zephaniah prophesied passionately to the southern tribes of Israel, called Judah. He was constantly looking to the Day of the Lord when the Lord would bring about judgement for those who ignored Him and rebelled against Him.  On the contrary, the Day of the Lord would bring about victory, freedom from opression, God’s presence and peace for those who listened to His voice and followed Him.

Zephaniah pointed out that one thing that the Lord can’t stand is lukewarm behavior.

Ask the children…

How does Zephaniah describe those who are lukewarm?  What do they mistakenly think?

“I will search with lanterns in Jerusalem’s darkest corners to punish those who sit complacent in their sins. They think the Lord will do nothing to them, either good or bad.(Zephaniah 1:12)

What does Zephaniah prophesy the Lord will do to them?

“So their property will be plundered, their homes will be ransacked. They will build new homes but never live in them. They will plant vineyards but never drink wine from them. (Zephaniah 1:13)

These lukewarm people who think they are safe just because they don’t appear to be openly rebelling against the Lord, just going about their own selfish business of building their homes and working on their own vineyards will not escape the Lord’s wrath.  They won’t even live in their home or enjoy the fruit of their vineyards because they will be destroyed along with those who are openly rebellious.

Ask your children what a lukewarm shower feels like?  Is it satisfying?  Do you get mad at the hot water system?  That is how the Lord feels about lukewarm Christian activity.  Ask your children what a lukewarm christian life looks like?  Just going through the motions, no real passion for God, focus on self not others or God.  Now talk to God about any lukewarm attitudes and actions and ask God to heat you up so you are passionate about the things of the Lord.
