This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Zechariah 8 ) while we focus in on just a few verses.
Background: Zechariah and Haggai are two of the three post-exilic prophets and they prophesied to the same people at the same time. The nation of Judah had come back from Babylon after 70 years of captivity and begun to rebuild the temple. However it is now 16 years later and their zeal for that work has waned. Enter Zechariah to encourage the people to finish the temple and to look forward to the coming of Messiah and the restoration of their nation to greatness. Zechariah was a prophet who often saw visions and prophesied from these visions.
God Himself gives His people a word of encouragement to complete the work of re-building the temple.
Ask the children…
How were the people feeling about re-building the temple and the restoration of their nation?
“This is what the Lord of Heaven’s Armies says: All this may seem impossible to you now, a small remnant of God’s people.” (Zechariah 8:6)
Instead of looking at their small remnant, who does God encourage them to look at?
“But is it impossible for me? says the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.” (Zechariah 8:6)
When we compare our abilities to a God-sized task, we will always feel incapable and discouraged and likely will never start or will give up at the first sign of difficulty. But we aren’t supposed to be looking at ourselves, we are to be looking at the Lord of Heaven’s Armies for whom nothing is impossible.
Ask your children what God-sized task seems impossible for them to do? Now ask them to look at that task through God’s eyes. Can He do it? Bring that task before the Lord in prayer and commit it into His hands and commit to the first step. Praise God that from His throne will success be achieved through you.
