This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Zechariah 9) while we focus in on just a few verses.
Background: Zechariah and Haggai are two of the three post-exilic prophets and they prophesied to the same people at the same time. The nation of Judah had come back from Babylon after 70 years of captivity and begun to rebuild the temple. However it is now 16 years later and their zeal for that work has waned. Enter Zechariah to encourage the people to finish the temple and to look forward to the coming of Messiah and the restoration of their nation to greatness. Zechariah was a prophet who often saw visions and prophesied from these visions.
Looking out into the far future, Zechariah describes the humble coming of the Messiah king.
Ask the children…
How will the Messiah king enter Jerusalem?
“Your king is coming! A good king who makes all things right, a humble king riding a donkey, a mere colt of a donkey.” (Zechariah 9:9)
What will that king bring with him?
“He will offer peace to the nations, a peaceful rule worldwide, from the four winds to the seven seas.” (Zechariah 9:10)
Given the exile and slavery that God’s people had just come through, they were looking forward to God bringing them a great warrior king who would destroy all their enemies and establish a peace through domination. That was not at all the picture that Zechariah gave. Here was a king who would enter the city not on a warhorse, but on a hapless donkey. He won’t take other nations by force but he will offer them terms of peace. They could not imagine how God could do this. We however have seen the first part of the rest of the story. The coming of Jesus on a donkey to Jerusalem who offered all men peace with God through His shed blod. We look forward to the rest of the story when Jesus comes to establish that peace on earth like it is in heaven.
Ask your children to imagine Jesus coming in to Jerusalem on a donkey? What would it sound like, what would it look like? To those who spread olive branches on the ground, could they possibly imagine that in a few short days their king would allow himself to be crucified to open the door to world wide spiritual peace? Thank God that we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.
