This one year study thru the Bible for kids is designed to hit the highlights and provide practical application. I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Joel 2) while we focus in on just a few verses.
Background: The prophet Joel spoke to the southern kindgom of Judah in order to warn them of what was coming their way if they didn’t turn back to God. During Joel’s ministry a great plague of locusts came and destroyed everything thing in sight. With that backdrop Joel spoke to the people that that plague represents how God is going to do the same thing in future to those who oppose Him.
Before God does His own great locust plague and His armies march the earth destroying those who oppose Him (The Day of the Lord), God is looking for a particular response from people.
Ask the children…
How does God want His people to respond?
“That is why the Lord says, ‘Turn to me now, while there is time. Give me your hearts. Come with fasting, weeping, and mourning. 13 Don’t tear your clothing in your grief, but tear your hearts instead.”” (Joel 2: 12, 13)
How does God promise to respond?
“Return to the Lord your God, for he is merciful and compassionate, slow to get angry and filled with unfailing love. He is eager to relent and not punish.” (Joel 2:13)
Although the warnings of the future Day of the Lord could be scary, we do not have to be afraid because our God is merciful towards all who turn to Him from their wicked ways. Only those who are in opposition to God need fear.
Ask your children if they are afraid of the end times when there will be a great war between those who oppose God and those who follow God? Remind them that they need not fear if they are God’s side. God will be victorious and they will reign with Him.
