Background: Amos was a shepherd from the little town of Tekoa who prophesied to the big city folks of Israel who were living in the lap of luxury but ignoring God. Amos didn’t pull any punches when he told God’s people that if they didn’t turn back to God they would disciplined by God.
Amos reminds God’s people that they were chosen by God out of all the people’s of the earth. So how does God treat Israel?
Ask the children…
What is God’s relationship with Israel?
“’From among all the families on the earth, I have been intimate (have chosen) with you alone.’” (Amos 3:2)
What does that kind of relationship cause God to do?
“That is why I must punish you for all your sins.'” (Amos 3:2)
Out of all the families of the earth, God chose the Israelites to be His own family. And what parent doesn’t discipline their children out of love when they are disboedient. That is what drove God to discipline His children – LOVE!
Ask your children how they feel about discipline? Does it feel loving when it gets applied to them? Why do they think their parents do it? Remind that just like God, parents disipline because they love their children and want the best for them.
