Devotions on Parables For Children – Rescuing Sheep From A Well

Jesus told a parable (story) about the miusunderstanding of the purpose of God’s Law by using the example of rescuing sheep from a pit. What did He mean by this? (Matthew 12:10-13)

Jesus had entered the synagogue on a Sabbath day.  The Pharisees (religious leaders) were looking for an opportunity to catch Jesus breaking the Law so they could accuse Him in front of all of the people.  Then Jesus saw a man with a withered hand…

Ask the children…

Why did the Pharisees ask Jesus this question?

“The Pharisees asked Jesus, ‘Does the law permit a person to work by healing on the Sabbath?’” (Matthew 12:10)

Of course the Pharisees wanted to trick Jesus into saying that the Law does not permit work on the Sabbath and then disobeying the Law by healing the man.  But Jesus was too clever for these men.  What was Jesus’ response?

“And he answered, ‘If you had a sheep that fell into a well on the Sabbath, wouldn’t you work to pull it out? Of course you would. 12 And how much more valuable is a person than a sheep! Yes, the law permits a person to do good on the Sabbath.’” (Matthew 12:11, 12)

Jesus spoke about the intent of the Law which is to do good for people no matter what day it is.  Wouldn’t we do good for an animal like a sheep if it fell into a well?  Of course, then why not a man since he is more valuable than a sheep.  What did Jesus do then?

“Then he said to the man, ‘Hold out your hand.’ So the man held out his hand, and it was restored, just like the other one!” (Matthew 12:13)

Wow!  Jesus not only spoke about healing, He did it and he restored this man so he had two good hands so he could go out and work and feed his family and contribute to the community.

Ask your children, is there any good that God wants you to do even when it may seem inconvenient?  God often provides opportunities when we least expect it and it wasn’t in our plan for that day.  Make a plan to look out for opportunities to help out others today especially when it seems inconvenient.  Then report back at dinner and share how God worked.
