Hook: In this easy Bible Lesson for kids, God reveals His desire that all would prophesy to one another in order to encourage and build up one another.
Book: “Let love be your highest goal! But you should also desire the special abilities the Spirit gives—especially the ability to prophesy.” (1 Corinthians 14:1) This verse follows just after the chapter on love and how love is to most important thing. But notice that next thing that the apostle Paul emphasizes as important in the body, to prophesy. Also notice that Paul exhorts all to desire to prophesy. I take that to mean that the Holy Spirit wants to give that ability to every person in the body of Christ. That means children too!
Look: “But one who prophesies strengthens others, encourages them, and comforts them.” (1 Corinthians 14:3) As opposed to tongues that are speaking an unknown language requiring interpretation, prophecy is speaking to one another in our own language. We are speaking Holy Spirit given words of encouragement, to give strength and to comfort. Prophesy is speaking God’s heart toward people. It could be about some past or future event, but more often it is just a specific word God has for that person or that group. If we ask the Holy Spirit to give us special words for other people, He will do it. God loves to use others in the body to encourage, strengthen and comfort one another. It is not only for the pastor or our teachers. It is for all of us.
Took: Ask your children if they know of someone who could use encouragement, or strengthening or comfort? Why not ask the Holy Spirit right now to provide you just the right word to give to them. In that way you are following Paul’s command to “earnestly desire to prophesy”.
