So This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (1 Peter 3) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Peter wrote to the scattered Jewish christians who were undergoing persecution. He reminds them that they are suffering just like Christ did. They are privileged to respond to suffering the same way that Christ did, with humility and confidence that God will take care of Him.
Peter reminds these Jewish christians that God’s kingdom way of responding to suffering is not like the world’s way.
Ask the children…
How are christians not supposed to respond when evil is done to them?
“Don’t repay evil for evil. Don’t retaliate with insults when people insult you.” (1 Peter 3:9)
How are christians to respond to evil doers?
“Instead, pay them back with a blessing. That is what God has called you to do, and he will bless you for it.” (1 Peter 3:9)
The kingdom life is always upside down from the world’s way. Instead of giving back evil for evil, we are to bless those who persecute us. Remember how Jesus asked His Father not to count the people’s sins against them who nailed Him to the cross. So we are to bless those who do evil toward us.
Ask your children when was the last time someone did evil towards them? How did they respond? Because they are God’s children and He is taking care of them, how can they respond in the future when evil is done to them. How would blessing this person have looked like in the situation they described?
