This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (2 Peter 3) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Peter wrote this second letter to the scattered Jewish christians who were facing those in their midst who were teaching lies and causing many to doubts about Jesus and God’s plan for mankind. Peter exhorts his readers to stand firm and to hold onto the truths that they have been taught.
Some of these false teachers were denying that Jesus was going to come back because they hadn’t seen Him coming yet. Peter addresses this false teaching.
Ask the children…
How does Peter address the fact that Jesus hasn’t come back yet?
“A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day. 9 The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think.” (2 Peter 3:8, 9 )
What is God more concerned about than rushing to have Jesus come back?
“No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” (2 Peter 3:9)
When Jesus comes back that will be the end of people’s opportunity to turn to Him from their sins. At that time comes judgement. God wants all those who will to place their faith in Christ and to become part of His family for eternity. God is outside of time and therefore He can be patient to let this happen at the perfect time when everyone has heard the good news.
Ask your children if they know someone who doesn’t know the Lord? What is God hearts toward this person? Ask your children how they can express God’s loving and patient heart toward this person? Start that process right now with asking God to begin to open this person’s heart to Christ and their need for a Savior.
