This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Revelation 2) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: The apostle John has been exiled to the island of Patmos. There Jesus appears to him and instructs him to write a letter to the churches. Jesus gives instruction to each of the churches individually and then shares with them a vision of what is to come in the end times, judgement upon the earth, the final destruction of satan’s forces and the beginning of a new heaven and new earth.
John writes specifically to the church in Ephesus to give them Jesus’ warning.
Ask the children…
What was Jesus’ complaint about the church in Ephesus?
“But I have this complaint against you. You don’t love me or each other as you did at first![b] 5 Look how far you have fallen!” (Revelation 2:4)
What does Jesus instruct them to do?
“Turn back to me and do the works you did at first.” (Revelation 2:5)
Most of us can remember the zeal that we had when we first came to know Jesus. We loved to read our bibles and spend time with God, we couldn’t wait to enjoy fellowship with other believers and to tell our friends about Jesus. But does our life exhibit that same zeal today? That is what had happened to the Ephesian church. Jesus told them to turn back to Him. Fall in love with Jesus all over again and get back to those activities that encouraged that love.
Ask your children if they can remember when they first came to know Jesus? How did it feel? What did they do? How does that compare to their love for Jesus today? How could they fan the flames of their love for Jesus just liek the Ephesian church?
