This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Matthew 1) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: This Christmas day we are taking some time away from our through the Bible journey to focus on the birth of Jesus. God entrusted His Son to a young couple who were not even married yet although they were engaged. When Joseph discovered his wife Mary was pregnant, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and convinced him not to break off the engagement, but that this child was from the Holy Spirit. God was stepping into history to save His people from their sins.
Ask the children…
Why did all this happen?
“All of this occurred to fulfill the Lord’s message through his prophet” (Matthew 1:22)
God never breaks a promise. What was His promise?
“Look! The virgin will conceive a child!
She will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel,[j]
which means ‘God with us’.” (Matthew 1:23)
God’s promise was that He would caused a virgin to become pregnant and that through that miraculous birth He would come to live with His people. In the Old Testament the high priest had to go through such elaborate preparations in order to come into the presence of God in the tabernacle and then the temple, but now God has come so that all could see Him and hear His voice and see His mighty acts right there in their midst. This is the story of Christmas.
Ask your children what ‘God with us’ means to them? How does Jesus becoming a baby and coming to this earth impact their lives today? Spend some time worshipping Jesus for His willingness to come and experience all that we do and loving us so much to die for us so that we too could have new life.
