This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Philemon 1) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: Paul wrote to his friend Philemon to ask Philemon to welcome back his runaway slave named Onesimus. Onesimus had since become a christian under Paul’s ministry and Paul wanted Onesimus to do the right thing and go back to his master, but now as a fellow servant of the Lord.
Based upon their relationship, Paul makes a specific plea to Onesimus.
Ask the children…
Why did Paul think Philemon should take his slave Onesimus back when by Roman law he could have Onesimus killed for running away?
“I appeal to you to show kindness to my child, Onesimus. I became his father in the faith while here in prison.” (Philemon 1:10)
What are the other reasons that Philemon should welcome Onesimus back?
“Onesimus[c] hasn’t been of much use to you in the past, but now he is very useful to both of us. 12 I am sending him back to you, and with him comes my own heart.” (Philemon 1:11)
Paul made a strong case for his plea. Onesimus was now a believer in Christ, his attitude had obviously changed as Paul said he was now useful and finally because Paul was sending him back to Philemon with his own heart. Paul obviously put a high priority on obedience or he wouldn’t have sent Onesimus back and on restoration of a relationship.
Ask your children if they have a friendship that has been broken by the actions of one or both persons? What happened? What steps can they take today to restore that relationship? Make that a prayer and action project for this week.
