This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Hebrews 2) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: This unknown author wrote to the Jewish christians who were scattered everywhere and were facing persecution for their faith. Many were considering renouncing their faith and to return back to the safety of Judaism. The author exhorts them to remain true to Christ because He is in every way superior to their old Jewish legal system.
The writer instructs his readers that Jesus came to break the power of the Devil and the slavery they were experiencing.
Ask the children…
Why did Jesus have to become flesh and blood just like we are?
“Because God’s children are human beings—made of flesh and blood—the Son also became flesh and blood. For only as a human being could he die, and only by dying could he break the power of the devil, who had[g] the power of death.” (Hebrews 2:14)
Jesus broke the power of the devil over death by rising from the dead. How does this give us all hope so that we don’t have to fear death?
“Only in this way could he set free all who have lived their lives as slaves to the fear of dying.” (Hebrews 2:15)
Jesus promised us that as believers, that our new birth conquers death. When our physical body dies, we will go on living in spirit. Death is only a transition to the new life we will have in God’s presence for eternity. Now that is something to shout about.
Ask your children if they are afraid to die? Why? Remind them that our earthly bodies are only earth suits that house who we really are in the spirit. Jesus died to give life to our spirits that will live forever. We are to take care of these bodies as a gift of God while we are on this earth, but we don’t have to afraid of them wearing out and us dying as a transition to our heavenly home. Talk about some family members or friends how have died and gone to be with the Lord and what they are probably experiencing right now.
