This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 4) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
God assigned everyone in the Israelite camp with a duty. Let’s take a look at one of these.
Ask the children…
What duty was Eleazar given?
“Eleazar son of Aaron the priest will be responsible for the oil of the lampstand, the fragrant incense, the daily grain offering, and the anointing oil.” (Numbers 4:16)
What other duty was Eleazar given?
“In fact, Eleazar will be responsible for the entire Tabernacle and everything in it, including the sanctuary and its furnishings.” (Numbers 4:16)
Everyone in the Israelite camp was important and put to work. When the camp moved everyone had to do their job or chaos would reign. God gave everyone a job to do for the benefit of everyone.
Ask your children what duties they have around the house? What would happen if they didn’t do their jobs? Remind them that they are an important member of the family and God placed them there to help and serve everyone else.
