This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 9) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
God gave the people special instructions on when to begin the desert journey and when to stop.
Ask the children…
What told the people to start their journey?
“Whenever the cloud lifted from over the sacred tent, the people of Israel would break camp and follow it.” (Numbers 9:17)
What told the people to stop their journey?
“And wherever the cloud settled, the people of Israel would set up camp.” (Numbers 9:17)
God made it clear when the people were to move. When the cloud lifted off over the Tabernacle (God’s presence was lifting) they would pack up and begin their journey, and when the cloud came down over the Tabernacle again (God’s presence was coming down), they would stop. What could be clearer than that? It was all about traveling with God’s presence.
Ask your children when they go on a vacation, how do they know when it is time to leave? Who in the family says it is time to get in the car and start off? Who does the final check around the house to make sure everything and everyone is packed and ready to go? Who makes sure that you are taking God along? Next time you get in the car to go somewhere, ask God to come with you and bless your trip. You’ll be glad you did.
