This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 14) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
God asked Moses to choose one man from each of the 12 tribes to go in and spy out the land that He was giving to them. 10 of the spies came back with the report that the people of the land were too big and powerful for them to fight. But Joshua and Caleb came back with a different report.
Ask the children…
How did Joshua and Caleb react to the report of the other 10 spies?
“Do not rebel against the Lord, and don’t be afraid of the people of the land.” (Numbers 14:9)
How did Joshua and Caleb see their enemies? Who did they choose to rely upon?
“They are only helpless prey to us! They have no protection, but the Lord is with us! Don’t be afraid of them!” (Numbers 14:9)
When we look at ourselvs and our abilities, the world around us seems like a scary place. When we look at God and His abilities and His heart, then our faith grows and our fears go away. That is what Joshua and Caleb did. They gazed and God and only glanced at the giants who were in the land. They chose to take God at His word.
Ask your children what giants they are afraid of in their lives? What things scare them? Who are they looking at, the circumstance or God? Spend some time with them gazing at God and what He has done and promises to do and then speak out loud your confidence that God is bigger than the circumstance.
