This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 15) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
God knew that His people would tend to stray and follow after evil, so He gave them some holy reminders to keep them on track. Here is one of them.
Ask the children…
What did God instruct the people to do?
“Give the following instructions to the people of Israel: Throughout the generations to come you must make tassels for the hems of your clothing and attach them with a blue cord.” (Numbers 15:38)
What were the tassles supposed to do?
“When you see the tassels, you will remember and obey all the commands of the Lord instead of following your own desires and defiling yourselves, as you are prone to do. 40 The tassels will help you remember that you must obey all my commands and be holy to your God.” (Numbers 15:39, 40)
Were the tassles themselves significant? No, they were just a clearly visible reminder that the people were to obey what the Lord instructed them do, whether it was to put tassles on their clothing or follow all of the Lord’s commands.
Ask your children what symbols around your house remind them that they are God’s children and that they are to follow Him? Maybe there is a cross, a painting of Jesus, some angels, a bible, etc. How about God’s call to hide His words in our hearts? Rather than putting the reminder on the outside, how about putting the holy reminder on the inside. Choose a verse to memorize today and think of it as a tassle on your clothing that you have put their as a reminder.
