This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 24) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
As God’s people were traveling towards the Promised Land, they crossed over the region of Moab. The Moabite king, Balak, called on a prophet named Balaam to curse God’s people. Instead God called Balaam to bless His people.
Ask the children…
Where did Balaam get his prophetic blessing?
“the message of one who hears the words of God, who sees a vision from the Almighty, who bows down with eyes wide open.” (Numbers 24:4)
What was the blessing?
“God brought them out of Egypt; for them he is as strong as a wild ox. He devours all the nations that oppose him, breaking their bones in pieces, shooting them with arrows. 9 Like a lion, Israel crouches and lies down: like a lioness, who dares to arouse her? Blessed is everyone who blesses you, O Israel, and cursed is everyone who curses you..” (Numbers 24:8, 9)
Balaam could only speak what the Lord had given him and that was a marvelous blessing on God’s people. God’s still loves to bless His people. That is His nature to bless.
Ask your children to name the blessings that Balaam spoke. What does that say about how God felt about His people? Ask your children how they think God feels about them? Remind them that they are the apple of God’s eye and He thinks they are wonderful.
