This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 26) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
When God’s people refused to go in and take the Promised Land at Kadesh Barnea, God promised that His people would as a result of their disobedience would wander in the desert for 40 years. He promised that they would all die out except Joshua and Caleb who had believed God and urged the people to go in and take the land. Does God keep His promises?
Ask the children…
After wandering in the desert for 40 years and now when they took a census of the people, how many people were left of the previous generation?
“Not one person on this list had been among those listed in the previous registration taken by Moses and Aaron in the wilderness of Sinai..” (Numbers 26:64)
Did God keep His promise?
“For the Lord had said of them, ‘They will all die in the wilderness.’ Not one of them survived except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.” (Numbers 26:65)
God is a promise keeper. He always fulfiills the promises He makes. Sometimes His timing isn’t what we would like or how He fulfills His promise is not the way we would do it, but He always comes through.
Ask your children what promises they are relying upon God for? If they can’t think of any, go to http://www.365promises.com/ to see a few. God wants us to rely on His promises.
