This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Number 33) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Numbers begins one year after the Exodus from Egypt and records the Israelites refusal to go into the Promised Land after only 11 days of their journey and therefore the divine discipline of wandering for 40 years in the wilderness until the old generation dies out and an entirely new generation is raised up. The book of Numbers gets its name from the two censuses that are taken, one of the old generation and one of the new generation.
As God’s people prepared to cross the Jordan and go in and take the Promised Land, God gave them a warning about spiritual splinters?
Ask the children…
What was God’s warning and what would happen if they refused to obey Him?
“But if you fail to drive out the people who live in the land, those who remain will be like splinters in your eyes and thorns in your sides. They will harass you in the land where you live.” (Numbers 33:55)
What would God do if they disobeyed Him?
“And I will do to you what I had planned to do to them.” (Numbers 33:56)
God knew that if His people did not drive out all the inhabitants of the land, that eventually that they would be influenced by these people and begin to take on their pagan worship and turn their backs on God. And sadly that is exactly what happened. God gives us warnings for our own good because He loves us. The inhabitants of the land became like spiritual splinters that festered and caused the people to turn away from God.
Ask your children how a splinter feels in their finger? How would it feel if you didn’t take it out or left some of it in? That is what happens when we allow sin to remain in our lives. God instructs us to repent, turn away from that sin, and take it out of our lives so we can enjoy our wonderful relationship with Him. Are there any spiritual splinters that you need to take out right now?
