This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Leviticus 6) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Leviticus is all about keeping God’s people in the right relationship with God and one another through offerings, sacrifices and rules of conduct. In order to guide the carrying out of these instructions God provided priests, or Levites, to teach the people and to devote themselves to following God’s laws.
When the people of Israel sinned against one another God instructed them to do something I call ‘Pay Bay Plus’.
Ask the children…
So when someone was caught in a sin, what did they have to do first?
“You must give back whatever you stole, or the money you took by extortion, or the security deposit, or the lost property you found, 5 or anything obtained by swearing falsely.” (Leviticus 6:4)
Then what did they have to do?
“You must make restitution by paying the full price plus an additional 20 percent to the person you have harmed.” (Leviticus 6:5)
So becausae of the injury or harm that someone caused to another, they had to pay back what they had taken plus they had to add 20% or one fifth of the value on top of it. That was because they had wronged the other person plus they had taken away the other person’s right to use this property for a period of time.
“Give it back!” “You stole that from me?” Sound familiar around your house. Ever consider giving back what was taken ‘plus’? Ask your children how they would feel if they had to give something back that they ‘borrowed’ plus had to add to it? Our God is a God of justice and this is how God brought about justice.
