Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – February 23, Deuteronomy 11, “Blessing Or Curse”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Deuteronomy 11) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth and last book that Moses wrote and its name in means ‘second Law’. Moses is about to die and he addresses a new generation of God’s people. Moses gives a series of sermons to remind them of God’s faithfulness and to exhort them to trust and obey God when they enter the land so that they will enjoy His blessings.

In Moses’s second sermon he told the people that whether they receives God’s blessings or curses would be their choice when they entered the land.

Ask the children…

What did the people need to choose if they wanted to be blessed?

“Look, today I am giving you the choice between a blessing and a curse! 27 You will be blessed if you obey the commands of the Lord your God that I am giving you today.” (Deuteronomy 11:26, 27)

What choices did Moses say would result in curses?

“But you will be cursed if you reject the commands of the Lord your God and turn away from him and worship gods you have not known before.” (Deuteronomy 11:28)

God is a God of choices.  He does not force us to do anything.  He gave the people a choice, do you want to be blessed or cursed?  It entirely depends upon you.  Obey my commands and God will guarantee blessings and curses if His people disobey.  It really isn’t that complicated.  Why was it so hard for God’s people to obey then?

Ask your children what causes them to disobey God?  Ever since the fall of Adam and Eve, we have all struggled with sin.  We want to do things our own way rather than God’s.  We choose to believe that there is some way to happiness and fulfillment other than God’s way.  And then a wise person asks us, “How is that working out for you?”
