This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Deuteronomy 14) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Deuteronomy is the fifth and last book that Moses wrote and its name in means ‘second Law’. Moses is about to die and he addresses a new generation of God’s people. Moses gives a series of sermons to remind them of God’s faithfulness and to exhort them to trust and obey God when they enter the land so that they will enjoy His blessings.
As Moses reminded God’s people of the laws that God had given them, Moses reminded them to take care of the Levites. The Levites had been set apart as priests to serve God and God’s people exclusively. They had not been given any land, only specific cities to live in. They were dependent upon God’s people to meet their needs so they could devote themselves to the Lord.
Ask the children…
What were the people supposed to do with the tithe?
“At the end of every third year, bring the entire tithe of that year’s harvest and store it in the nearest town.” (Deuteronomy 14:28 )
Who was to receive a portion of this tithe?
“Give it to the Levites, who will receive no allotment of land among you, as well as to the foreigners living among you, the orphans, and the widows in your towns, so they can eat and be satisfied.” (Deuteronomy 12:29)
God wanted to care for the Levites as well as the widows and orphans. The rest of the people were to take some of their bounty and give it as God’s resources to those people whom God had selected. In this way the Lord cared for the Levites whom He had selected to exclusively do His work.
Ask your children if they know of some people today whom God has selected to do His work? (Pastors, missionaries, etc.) How are we to care for them out of the bounty God has given to us? Who’s money is it that we receive when we work? If it is all God’s money, then He can direct us where to give it and we can be happy to do it.
