Free 5 minute Kid’s Devotional, One Year Bible Study – February 4, Leviticus 13, “Priestly Doctors”

This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Leviticus 13) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.

Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Leviticus is all about keeping God’s people in the right relationship with God and one another through offerings, sacrifices and rules of conduct. In order to guide the carrying out of these instructions God provided priests, or Levites, to teach the people and to devote themselves to following God’s laws.

God was so concerned about His people that He instructed them on how to handle all kinds of medical conditions.  But who would be the doctors of God’s people and what would be their medical texts?

Ask the children…

Who does the examination of medical condition?

“If anyone, either a man or woman, has a sore on the head or chin, 30 the priest must examine it.” (Leviticus 13:29)

How would the priest know what to do?

“If he finds it is more than skin-deep and has fine yellow hair on it, the priest must pronounce the person ceremonially unclean. It is a scabby sore of the head or chin.” (Leviticus 13:30)

Have you ever had the chicken pox? When we get these, we go to the doctor and they diagnose what it is beccause of their training and then send us home and tell us to have little contact with other people because we are contagious.  When the chicken pox spots start to scab up and get hard, then we are getting better and aren’t contagious anymore.  The priest did the same thing with sores on the body.  They examined them just as the Lord prescribed and based upon the exaomination proclaimed the person clean (healthy) or uncleam (contagious) . If they were contagious then they would be sent off by themselves until the priest examinded them again.

Ask your children how they would feel if there were no doctors and they didn’t know what to do when they got sick?  Isn’t God wonderful to have taken such good care of His people by giving them doctors and a plan for treating illness.  Thank God for health professionals today.
