This free one year kid’s devotional study thru the Bible is designed to hit the highlights, provide practical application and requires no preparation. If you have a little more time, I encourage you to read the whole section of scripture (Leviticus 16) while we focus in on just a few verses in 5 minutes.
Background: God inspired Moses to write the first five books in the Bible. The book of Leviticus is all about keeping God’s people in the right relationship with God and one another through offerings, sacrifices and rules of conduct. In order to guide the carrying out of these instructions God provided priests, or Levites, to teach the people and to devote themselves to following God’s laws.
Because the Israelites continually sinned, God provided a way once every year for His poeple to be purified and for all these sins to be foregiven. How did God do it?
Ask the children…
When was the special day each year and what were the people supposed to do on that day?
“On the tenth day of the appointed month in early autumn,[f] you must deny yourselves.[g] Neither native-born Israelites nor foreigners living among you may do any kind of work. This is a permanent law for you.” (Leviticus 16:29)
This day was a day of rest when the people would not do any work or would they eat anything. What would the priest do and what would then happen to the people?
“On that day offerings (by the priest) of purification (atonement) will be made for you,[h] and you will be purified (atoned) in the Lord’s presence from all your sins.” (Leviticus 16:30)
The priest would make the prescribed sacrifices to the Lord in order to purify the people for any sin they had done the previous year. Notice how the poeple did not do anything themselves. Why? Because they could not do anything to purify themselves, it had to be done for them. It is the same with us today. Jesus was the sacrifice that was made for our sins so many years ago. But His sacrifice cleansed us (atoned for us) not only for one year but for every sin done past, present and future. We can be clean and pure every day.
Ask your children how they feel after they take a bath? That is just like the pure and clean feeling from sin that Jesus gave to us as a gift. We are spiritually clean and whiter than snow. Every day is a Day of Atonement for us who have been brought into God’s family through the sacrfice of Jesus Christ.
